Bringing back Burpril

Picture the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, it's early 2020 and we are approaching April. During that time, I was furloughed from my first job in the UK, still stuck at my parent's place in Germany because traveling was not possible, and I was kind of bored.

One thing I used to do during that time: Exercising. With the limited equipment I had — a few cheap dumbbells, an exercise mat and a jump rope — I tried to be creative and design my daily workouts.

That was the time when I got introduced to Burpril. The concept is easy, every day in April, you have to do 100 burpees. There were no other rules.

While it sounded boring, what made me join regardless, was the community that jumped onto it. There were quite a few people that joined the fun, sharing the progress, their pain and the fun. It was a good time.

The following years, we tried to continue with it but for some reason, it lost its fun. On my side, I was also busy building out Maxout and was trying too hard to integrate Burpril into Maxout. In hindsight, that wasn't a great move.

So, in this year, I skipped Burpril altogether. And I felt sad about it. I dare to say that I missed it.

Over the past few months, I've been developing the idea to try bringing it back to life.

I've got a rough concept in my mind that I think could work on a yearly basis and I've got some ideas for Burpril as a long-term project. But there is still some work to do. The biggest will be building back a community that's interested in joining the challenge.

I have got 6 full months to work on this and I hope by end of March, we will be able to enjoy Burpril 2025 the same way we did in 2020. At least that's my hope for it.

Let's do it!
